….” Very stoked that you are being proactive, good idea! Dear good good people, ...."I am happy to come across such an organisation. For year of travelling around the Philippines I witness the same poignant problem, underpaid local staff by expensive resorts. I did my own campaign to alight this problem to where ever I end up and speak to locals about the situations of big resorts (mostly owned by Foreigners) and the money they earn compare to the wages of their staff . But with the same Filipino attitude of –‘ at least we have a job’ seems to overshadow the unfairness"….. …… "I am 100% behind your organisation, I will let your presence be known and make you an example to others" …. Words from the Philippines
This problem is rife through out the Philippines, of under paying staff, andobviously the largest offenders are the wealthy Filipinos them selves with their excess of housemaids and other staff in there businesses. …To pick on A particular foreign group who have brought at great cost their foreign money to set up maintain establish a tourist market that would not exist apart from the risk to spend their money in a third world country who in return provide a income to the locals. Before a true and just opinion on how much money they generate, the facts have to be known. And the facts are most foreigners will never get their capital back on their investment. (Most European, Australian, Americans lose their money on these investment witch the Filipino family inherate. The only reason a lot of these business stay afloat is they are continuously propped up with foreign money). Now to you think the jealousy of all who don’t have lives would be better off if there were no foreign investment? It’s very easy to point the finger with out the facts and I would hope all business who can afford to pay do so. Most travellers to Siargao Island are budget surfer tourists who are unemployed trying to make their last dollar last until they return home work for a couple of months and off on another adventure through out the developing world...... Words from Australia
The web site siargaoisland.net is not for picking on some group for not paying or treat the employees good. If you have been at Siargao I think you know what it’s all about. Bringing capital to the island gives no one the right to force local people to work every hour they are awake for only 50 peso a day. The resort owners can not blame “low budget surfer tourists” for the bad conditions and the fact? that wealthy Pilipino also treat housemaids and others bad is no excuse for others to do the same.. The fact is that one breakfast and one beer, at some resort, is the same price as a daily wage for two workers. You write in your e-mail “unemployed tourists trying to make their last dollar last until they return home working for a couple of months”. I don’t think that “poor people” from Australia can afford to go to Siargao. I have met a lot of tourists at Siargao and I am sure they all can pay the cost for decent conditions for the resort workers. I have also been at a lot of resorts at Siargao and I have seen how the owners invest the profits….. ….It’s a matter of respect for the people in third world. Decent visitors with open eyes know what it’s all about. People from the “rich world” can set some good examples. Give it all a second thought. Some lines from siargaoisland.net.
It would be nice if in the Philippines there would come more offices who controls and checks politicians and all kind of government employees such as mayors, police, .... so the small time corruption can be minimized and even excluded. This is the only way to a good working society where everyone has equal rights and opportunities. Some lines from Siargao Island
I'd like to commend you for a job well done exposing the resorts in Siargao that pay their staff below the minimum wage. It is really unfair and inhumane for the natives. Your revelation is really shocking. In fact my further probing led me to the fact that some local government workers are only getting paid p500 per month! Some lines from Siargao Island
I about your "minimum wage thing". I been in Siargao for many times and talk to some workers of the resorts owned by Foreigners. I learned that they are working 24 hours a day and they are not compensated humanly. If we could that minimum wage. Some points to clarify that not all female worker are wanted to catch rich male specimen. It’s a low grading perceptions. But I appreciate your website, as a concern website it’s very helpful...
